La comparación de resultados, un nicho bibliográfico descuidado (2/2)

ara el biblioanálisis de la búsqueda que introduje en el post previo voy a centrarme en los resultados de PubMed y de la Web of Science (WOS). Los resultados de Scopus son muy desconcertantes. Aunque valoro muy positivamente la inclusión de los libros y los capítulos de libros (Fig. 1: 21, 40, 52, 54, 61, 64, 68, 72, 82, 85, 86, 90) la impresión se ve desfavorecida por el ruido de artículos como el 1 o el 9. El primero trata no de nuestro tema del abdomen abierto sino de la reconstrucción de la pared abdominal y de mama. El 9 trata de las ostomías. La referencia 40 (How the snake lost its legs) está totalmente desviada del tema.
El 30 de diciembre en particular pero también los días previos en general (post) Scopus ofrecía un funcionamiento defectuoso que de alguna manera fue anunciado en el blog en un post titulado Scopus experiencing search issues el 23 de diciembre. El día 2 de enero el Twitter de Scopus anunció el restablecimiento sin más, sin que sepamos cual era el problema o qué funciones no trabajaban correctamente. La avería o lo que fuera que fuese no se anunciaba en la propia plataforma. El chat pero también el servicio de atención diferida  (formulario atendido por correo-e) son correctos en las formas, pero algo opacos y en ocasiones reticentes, tal y como he podido experimentar en persona.
El hecho de que ante la enormidad de los resultados (*) de los conjuntos no combinados se obtenga eventualmente un final tan decepcionante no se justifica en mi opinión en el hecho de que la sintaxis de la estrategia fallara. Esto me lleva a señalar que tanto en PubMed como en WOS planteamos exactamente la misma estrategia, mientras que en Scopus tuvimos que ejecutar la búsqueda por pasos y finalmente combinar los conjuntos con los operadores booleanos al uso y en modo Advanced.
Me planteaba después del primer post cómo encarar este biblioanálisis pensando en aquello de a quién dirigirlo, pensando en el público a quien dirigir este post. Si pensara en quienes rigen y distribuyen las bases de datos bibliográficas les sugeriría que tuvieran en cuenta proactivamente a los usuarios con necesidades de información avanzadas y a los profesionales de la documentación. Y cuando digo "usuarios con necesidades de información avanzadas" incluyo a quienes tienen que dar cuenta de la metodología y a quienes tienen que garantizar haber consultado bien las fuentes, sea ante una institución o ante una publicación peer-reviewed. Si me dirigiera a los colegas documentalistas les pediría que no se dejaran llevar tanto por las novedades y los gadgets de los rebrandings y el marketing y volvieran a interesarse por los estándares y los viejos anhelos del control bibliográfico universal. Pero si pensara en los usuarios les aconsejaría que actuaran con método.

El hecho de que la búsqueda de PubMed y WOS no sea exactamente reproducible en WOS es una desventaja per se, una complicación, pero además nos recuerda que es un retroceso. Las primeras búsquedas bibliográficas que se hacían telemáticamente en los años 80, en las que consultábamos Medline (el núcleo de PubMed) y a veces Embase, en el host o servidor de DIMDI (Deutsches Institut für Medizinische Dokumentation und Information), tampoco eran exactamente reproducibles. Y cuando pretendíamos ejecutar una búsqueda de PubMed que habíamos hecho en DIMDI  en los servidores de Dialog o DataStar, para acceder a la base de datos del ISI (Institut for Scientific Information de Filadelfia) tampoco. Sin embargo, existía la aspiración de poder consultar todas las bases de datos a la vez en un mismo host. Y eso fue factible en los 90, aunque suponía un costo añadido. Con el advenimiento de los CD-ROM y la gratuidad el año 1996 del acceso a PubMed, las aspiraciones se diluyeron en el deslumbramiento de un soporte user-friendly, esto es "popular".
Ante un análisis muy somero de los resultados obtenidos en PubMed y WOS me detengo en la referencia 27 porque aunque no aparezca en los resultados de la búsqueda en PubMed sí que se encuentra en la base de datos (!), como no es de extrañar dado que es una revista de Traumatología muy importante. Como es un artículo de 2013, la explicación no es una actualización lenta o defectuosa sino que el motor de búsqueda la pasó por alto. La referencia 38 tampoco aparece en los resultados de PubMed, pero no era una referencia que nos interesara. A la vista de los resultados en PubMed y en WOS, cuyo cotejo resiste la crítica más acerba, nada -aparte de algún registro como el que señalo- despierta algo de preocupación. De hecho la tabla sustenta mi criterio de que las búsquedas bibliográficas responsables se deben hacer en las dos bases de datos. Tal vez Scopus, cuando funcione bien, puede aportar resultados más europeos, más libros y el privilegio de obtener pronto preprints del catálogo Elsevier, tan prolijo.
