La comparación de resultados, un nicho bibliográfico descuidado (1/2)

ago búsquedas bibliográficas de temas médicos desde el año 1986 y el interés que tienen los usuarios por contrastar los resultados que se obtienen en las diferentes bases de datos existe. Otra cosa es que ese interés se pueda satisfacer y hacerlo con fundamento. Los intermediarios o "acompañadores" (apomediarios) nos tenemos que ver justificando la disparidad numérica de los resultados indicando que una base de datos es estadounidense pero otra es más europea, y cosas por el estilo. Tampoco es fácil explicar con solvencia que hay revistas que no se indexan íntegramente o que se incorporan más tarde que otras, dependiendo de su valor. Naturalmente el usuario, a las primeras aclaraciones, lejos de mostrar mayor interés lo ve inhibido y acaba aceptando listas de resultados que será muy difícil comparar con los recursos gratuitos o freebies que todos manejamos.

Recientemente realicé una búsqueda bibliográfica cuyo planteamiento reproduzco en la fig. 1. Vemos para una idéntica estrategia resultados que nos llaman la atención por la proporcionalidad o escalabilidad.

La Web of Science (WOS) proporciona en "Analyze results" un instrumento que permite calcular qué registros están en MEDLINE. MEDLINE es el núcleo de PubMed y cuenta con 19 millones de referencias. En la figura 2 y en la figura 3 vemos esa funcionalidad.

Como se desprende de la figura 3, en una búsqueda en la Web of Science, podríamos limitar los resultados a aquellas referencias que están en MEDLINE o en SCIELO.
Pero en ese instrumento se acabó la posibilidad de sacarle más rendimiento al instinto comparador del que todos adolecemos. Descargar los registros de las tres bases de datos y analizarlos es una tarea que ningún gadget del panorama gratuito nos permite hacer. No es ajeno al problema el panorama de que la base de datos Scopus y el gestor bibliográfico Mendeley pertenecen al grupo Elsevier, mientras que PubMed no deja descargar registros a Mendeley masivamente y la Web of Science conduce a Endnote, su gestor bibliográfico. Otro gestor bibliográfico, Zotero, al principio de su florecimiento fallaba mucho en la detección de duplicados y es un berenjenal absorber resultados en diferentes formatos con la idea de poderlos sistematizar y tamizar. Un lío que disuade al más pintado. 
Sin embargo, como pretendo decir desde la primera línea, sí que hay un interés en comparar resultados, no solo para valorar o garantizar nuestras búsquedas y la fiabilidad de las bases de datos, sino para facilitar nuestro trabajo para obtener los artículos y los libros en su forma primaria sin enloquecer. Al final los usuarios se acaban confinando a una sola base de datos y a un solo gestor bibliográfico, de manera que hay una fidelización que en mi opinión es forzada, por aburrimiento y desistimiento.
Lo segundo que habría que comentar de la tabla de la figura 1 es que se muestran 53 resultados en PubMed pero hay 49 resultados de MEDLINE en WOS. Aparte de que PubMed es un poco más que Medline, que es su núcleo, tenemos que decir que podría ser que la WOS no tiene porque estar totalmente actualizada con respecto a MEDLINE. Siempre estará más al día PubMed.

Me he entretenido en hacer una tabla con los resultados entre 2010-2017. La limitación a esos años, que en realidad son los últimos, los que más suelen interesar, permite además introducir un poco de orden y valorar en pie de "igualdad" las tres fuentes.
La figura 4 muestra la descripción de los resultados un poco descuidadamente, ya que no me ha parecido útil perder el tiempo en estandarizar las referencias bibliográficas y presentarlas en alguno de los formatos preceptivos. Me ha interesado más que permitieran identificar los documentos y valorar o adivinar porqué están en Scopus y no en PubMed, etcétera. Que Scopus incorpore muchos libros o capítulos de libros está bien, pero desconcierta ver que ha perdido mucha información que sí ofrecen las otros dos bases de datos. Que el artículo de J. J. Díaz aparezca en la Web of Science pero no en PubMed, tratándose de la revista Journal of Trauma, ahora llamada "Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery", es más que llamativo, alarmante.

En una segunda parte de este post me propongo valorar los resultados. Por hoy baste añadir que hay un registro duplicado en la Web of Science (el artículo de Y Yuan de 2013 está dos veces), aunque son dos referencias que no son exactamente iguales ya que se encuentra una más desarrollada y la otra es incipiente. Hecha esta salvedad, dejo para otro día el análisis, si es que es factible, de los resultados, y su odiosa comparación.
